Things That Make Us Happy

Graphic saying International Day of Happiness

March 20 was International Day of Happiness. To celebrate, the National Center for START Services® asked members of the START network what makes them happy. We conducted a poll and received 16 responses! Check out the answers below and think about what you might add that symbolizes happiness for you. Thank you to everyone who responded and for sharing happiness across the START network

  1. The beach makes me happy, hearing the waves especially. My immediate family makes me happy, their supportive and loving nature.
  2. Fitness
  3. My family, my friends, my passions, my mission, sunshine, and lots of furry friends
  4. Knowing my sister age 54 is coming to visit for three weeks and be with her grand niece and grand nephew.
  5. I am happiest when my cup is full enough to pour love into others and when others I care about fill my cup when I need their care the most. Happiness is all about the people around us and how they make us feel about ourselves and the world around us.
  6. Sunshine filtering through the trees as a warm breeze gently rocks my lakeside hammock! :)
  7. Teaching others about their history
  8. A sunny day spent outside!
  9. Family trips
  10. My service dogs make me happy. And one of my service dogs has an emotional support cat. My little crew makes me happy every day all day.
  11. The ability to fall asleep while reading a book. The older I get the less time I can put aside for leisure activities. Having time to read is lovely, and to be so unbothered and unhurried that dozing off doesn't add to any stress or worry is truly a happy moment.
  12. I am happiest when spending time with my partner, my family, friends, and my doggo! I am happiest when I am outside in nature (snowboarding, the beach, the lake, hiking, adventuring). I am happiest when creating art, doing yoga, moving my body and mind.
  13. Having dedicated time to sit down and curl up with a book I'm interested in makes me happy and allows me to practice self-care.
  14. I am happiest when I am with my two kids, in the company of my beloved family and close friends. I am happiest when I am at the beach listening to the waves lap against the shore, when I can hear the sounds of my kids laughing, even better when I'm laughing with them. I am happiest when the people around me share their true authentic selves with me and when I am in spaces where I can do the same.
  15. I am happiest in my yard with my family, friends and furbaby.
  16. When my 15 year old wants to hang out with me.
