Values in Action: Holding Hope, Building Belonging
The 2026 START National Training Institute (SNTI) will highlight how values come alive across our network. This year’s theme, Values in Action: Holding Hope, Building Belonging, reflects our commitment to creating environments where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health needs (IDD-MH), their families, and their supporters feel connected, valued, and supported.
Why Values?
Values are only words unless they guide action. Across the START network, we bring our values to life through practice, language, policies, and relationships. This year’s theme reflects our values of positive engagement, openness to learning, teamwork, and community.
Hope and Belonging in Action
Hope is action oriented. It represents motivation and confidence that goals can be reached. Belonging fosters well-being and community strength, creating more connected, inclusive systems. This year’s theme invites us to reflect on how hope sustains us and sparks possibilities and how belonging creates space for collaboration, cultural humility, and shared vision. SNTI 2026 will showcase practices, partnerships, and innovations that demonstrate how values are lived out, and how together, we can hold hope and build belonging.
2026 Learning Objectives
- Explore how START values come to life in practice, teamwork, and community.
- Reflect on the power of hope and belonging in creating connected systems of support.
- Demonstrate and share real-world strategies that show values in action.

General Information / What You Need to Know
Proposals will be selected to ensure the 2026 SNTI features a comprehensive, relevant, and diverse program. Priority will be given to proposals that clearly describe innovative and creative work, and those that integrate the voices and perspectives of people with lived experience of IDD-MH. We believe collaborative knowledge-sharing builds capacity at the highest level.
Through presentations, discussions, and collaborative learning, we will explore innovative strategies, evidence-informed practices, and stories of transformation that demonstrate how our shared values are applied in real-world settings. Sessions are expected to demonstrate advanced expertise, foster innovation, and incorporate diverse perspectives while remaining grounded in START’s guiding principles of collaboration, positive psychology, and person-centered practice.
