Description: When people think of assistive technology (AT), they may first think of tools that support physical access and mobility. However, AT can support many different aspects of everyday life. From wearables and communication supports to tools for executive functioning, emotional regulation, and everyday problem-solving, technology can support independence and enhance the mental health and well-being of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

This presentation will introduce the wide range of assistive technology available and explore how AT needs can be identified and supported in everyday settings. Participants will learn about emerging and readily available technologies, considerations for matching technology to each person and their environment, and ways professionals can advocate for access to effective supports. The presentation will consider how AT can support communication, choice, independence, self-regulation, and overall well-being for people with IDD and mental health needs.
