Description:
This presentation focuses on practical strategies that supporters and providers can use to help people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) during a suicidal crisis. Topics include the risk factors and warning signs of suicide for people with IDD, key communication guidelines when addressing suicide risk with people with IDD, and effective coping and regulation strategies for people with IDD to prevent or de-escalate a crisis.
Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain 5 warning signs of suicide for people with IDD
- Demonstrate 3 key communication guidelines when assessing suicide risk with people with IDD
- Describe how to leverage 4 strengths of people with IDD when supporting them in crisis
Lisa Morgan
Lisa Morgan is an autistic adult with lived experience of suicide loss and attempt. Her passion to support autistic individuals in crisis supports and suicide prevention led her to found the Autism and Suicide Prevention Workgroup. She also earned her Masters of Social Work degree which added to her Masters of Education degree.
Brenna Maddox
Brenna Maddox is a clinical psychologist with expertise in the assessment and treatment of co-occurring psychiatric conditions in autistic individuals across the lifespan. She is interested in preventing suicide and improving mental health outcomes for autistic people. She is the co-chair of the Autism and Suicide Prevention Workgroup and an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Carolina TEACCH Autism Program.
