Description:
Students with disabilities are often overlooked in the world of school safety. This session will address research about incidents of violence and safety among students with disabilities. Principles designed to improve practice in school safety for students with disabilities will be presented.
Objectives:
- Attendees will learn about the prevalence of violence among students with disabilities.
- Attendees will learn at least two strategies for improving school safety with students with disabilities.
- Attendees will learn about a framework for developing safety plans (ISPs) for students with disabilities.

Michele Gay- co-founder of the national non-profit, Safe and Sound Schools
Mother, educator, and co-founder of the national non-profit, Safe and Sound Schools, Michele Gay chose to act after losing her daughter Josephine Grace on December 14, 2012, in the Sandy Hook School tragedy. Since that time, Michele has built a powerful legacy in her daughter’s honor, and as a nationally recognized thought leader and advocate for the safety of special populations in educational settings.
Dr. Gabriel Lomas
Dr. Gabriel Lomas- Gallaudet University
Dr. Gabriel Lomas is a Professor and Director of Counseling Programs at Gallaudet University. Passionate about school safety, Dr. Lomas is the founder of the Connecticut Center for School Safety and Crisis Preparation. As an academic and scholar, Dr. Lomas has published and presented widely on topics related to school safety and the Deaf-disabled population.
