"Becoming Disabled” was the first article in the New York Times weekly series about disability that was written by people living with disabilities. Dr. Garland-Thomson states that disability is the largest minority group, and we can move in and out of it throughout our lives. She makes the point that we would all be better off preparing for disability rather than fleeing from it. She explains that truly being disabled requires finding community and understanding disability history, culture, rights, and obligations. Dr. Garland-Thomson also shares her views on what is meant by disability pride. "Becoming Disabled" is a necessary read, especially if advocacy is important to you.
