Truth and Reconciliation: Building research capacity of young adults with IDD and mental health service experiences...
The National Research Consortium on Mental Health in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is proud to host the first of our webinar series, Truth and Reconciliation: Building research capacity of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health service experiences, families, and clinicians. This webinar was hosted by the NRC’s partner Georgetown University.
Presenters:
Jessica M. Kramer, Associate Professor, University of Florida
Demetra Grigley, Associate Project Facilitator, National Center for START Services®
Vee Mayben, Advocate
Description:
Research has historically excluded persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health service experiences, and consequently continues to be informed by erroneous assumptions regarding their abilities, interests, and needs. The project drew upon a process of Truth and Reconciliation (T&R) through acknowledgement of harms in research, an apology from members of the research community, education about research rights, and ways to be involved in research. This webinar will describe the principles guiding the project, the collaborative approach to developing and implementing the T&R forums, and lessons learned.
Objectives:
- Describe how individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health experiences, mental health clinicians, and academic researchers worked together to develop Truth & Reconciliation Forums
- Delineate how implementing a Truth and Reconciliation process can acknowledge the impact of harms in research and build partnerships between researchers and persons with IDD-MH.
- Describe how lessons learned can apply to research and mental health practice with persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health service experiences.
