Lights, Camera, Advocacy!

Conference LogoThe 2018 theme, Lights, Camera, Advocacy! represents a chance for YOU to be the star! What are
your strengths? What are your dreams and goals? What knowledge and supports do you need to live a life of your choosing, and be a full participant in your community?

We hope you will join us on Friday, September 28 to meet new people, learn about resources that are available to you, and gain new advocacy skills so you can live your best life.

Spotlight Session 1

Exercising Your Right to Vote
James Ziegra, Disability Rights Center
Frank Vinciguerra, member of People First NH

2018 is a midterm election year, and Advocate NH and the DRC want to make sure that, however you decide to vote, you are empowered to make your voice heard. Presenters will discuss how to overcome barriers to casting your vote, and take questions from the audience. Attendees will have the opportunity to check out an accessible voting machine during lunch.

Spotlight Session 2

Staying Safe in Your Community
Moderator: Nate Webb, member of Advocate NH
Panelists: Keith Mitchell, Deputy Chief, Concord NH Police Department
Ryan Howe, Community Resource Officer, Concord Police Department

When citizens and Law Enforcement communicate effectively with each other, it builds relationships and keeps our community safe. A panel of representatives from law enforcement will offer tips on how to stay safe, and what to do if you find yourself in a dangerous situation or if you see or hear about illegal activity. We will also discuss the question, “What can police officers learn from people with disabilities?”

Spotlight Session 3

Getting Involved with a Self-Advocacy Group
Members of Advocate NH, People First, and ABLE NH
Do you ever wonder about getting together with other self-advocates to talk about issues that are important to you? Would you like to feel more connected with your community? There are several advocacy groups in New Hampshire - maybe one is right for you! During this session, members of Advocate NH, People First, and ABLE NH will share their experiences, and talk about how to get involved.

About the Conference

Since 2013 Advocate NH has planned our annual conference, Advocacy: Learn It! Live It! Love It! as a day for people with disabilities in NH, and their family members and individuals who serve and support them, to come together and join a network of advocates who care about making our communities inclusive and supportive.

This event is designed and executed by a team mostly made up of self-advocates, and each presentation includes at least one self-advocate presenter. That’s why we say the Advocate NH Annual Conference is the ONLY conference in New Hampshire by and for self-advocates.

We ensure that requests for accommodations are met so that participants can enjoy a fully accessible event.
