Assistive Technology and Aging with a Disability

As we get older, we all benefit from assistive technology solutions. However individuals who experience a disability frequently benefit from a more coordinated plan of assistive technology services and supports. This session will discuss and demonstrate assistive technology solutions to enable individuals who experience various disabilities to age in place. This includes the use of voice assistants; virtual participation; remote monitoring; devices for getting up into and out of; lifting, holding, and carrying solutions for arthritis; magnification and sound amplification solutions; solutions to reduce slips and falls; reminder devices and strategies; and back saving solutions.

Therese Willkomm, PhD

Therese Willkomm, PhD, ATP, directs the NH Statewide Assistive Technology (ATinNH) Program with the Institute on Disability, is a clinical associate professor in the University of New Hampshire Department of Occupational Therapy, and coordinates the graduate certificate in AT and the disability studies minor. Known internationally as “The MacGyver of Assistive Technology” and more recently as an expert in iPad modifications and apps for individuals with disabilities, Dr. Willkomm has provided AT services for over 30 years and authored 22 publications.
