A Guide for Staying Safe at Work training

The Guide for Staying Safe at Work training is a companion to the Staying Safe at Work, 3rd Edition (SSAW) training. The Guide is a document designed to teach participants to take what they learned in the SSAW training and apply it to their own workplace. The Guide can be used as a print version or as a fillable PDF on the computer. Areas of focus in the Guide include identifying hazards and ways to address them, emergency planning, and the importance of knowing information about your workplace and who can help when there are safety concerns.

The free Guide for Staying Safe at Work training is 1½ hours long and uses a scenario to illustrate how each section of the Guide can be used. Participants work collaboratively in small groups to fill in the Guide as though they are the worker in the scenario, then come back together to discuss as a large group. It is recommended to participate in Staying Safe at Work training prior to attending the Guide for Staying Safe at Work training.

By the end of this training, participants will know how to use the Guide for Staying Safe at Work in three ways:

  1. As a Documentation Tool, to practice applying what they learned during the Staying Safe at Work training to their workplace.
  2. As a Conversation Starter, to start discussions within their workplace about safety issues and possible solutions.
  3. As a Safety Planner, to identify ways to make their job safer in emergencies, as well as to set goals to stay safe at work.

Advocating for Your Safety at Work training

The Advocating for Your Safety at Work training is a companion to the Staying Safe at Work, 3rd Edition (SSAW) training. Safety in the workplace includes knowing when, and how, to advocate, or speak up, when there's a problem at work. This free 2½ hour training teaches workers with disabilities and those who support and employ them strategies for speaking up when there is a problem at work, including asking for reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) if applicable. A variety of resources will be shared, including a pocket guide for workers to refer to when they need a refresher. It is recommended to participate in Staying Safe at Work training prior to attending the Advocating for Your Safety at Work training.

By the end of this class, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify types of problems that may occur at work.
  2. Discuss employee rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
  3. Practice speaking up when there is a health or safety problem at work.
  4. Explain a disability in the context of employment.
