Filmmaker Dan Habib decided to create the documentary Mr. Connolly Has ALS after watching his son Samuel have a conversation with Connolly. But neither of them could speak. They both used communication devices — Samuel because of his cerebral palsy and Connolly because he had developed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
