Making Connections: Assuring Access for Children with Special Health Care Needs to Genetic Services

New England Regional Genetics NetworkThe New England Regional Genetics Network (NERGN) has evolved from the NEGC and we’re excited to create a new annual opportunity to improve access to services for underserved families across the New England region.

The meeting, entitled, "Making Connections: Assuring Access for Children with Special Health Care Needs to Genetic Services," will focus on improving partner understanding about the unique challenges encountered in connecting underserved populations with genetic services.

This special two day event features

  • Day 1: Small group work sessions for Public Health, Health Care Providers, CHWs/Social Workers, and Family Service Providers. If you are a member of one or more of these groups, please attend on Day 1 and share your thoughts!
  • Day 2: Includes presentations on the importance of cultural humility when working with a range of family backgrounds with Maria Isabel Frangenberg of National Family Voices, research on barriers to access of genetics information and services by Dr. Catharine Wang of Boston University, and a special cultural panel discussing perspectives on access to medical care and genetic services among different cultural groups.

  • Public Health Advocates for rural communities and cultural / ethnic groups needing improved connections to genetic services
  • Family members of individuals from diverse or rural backgrounds with genetic conditions willing to share their experiences in accessing genetic services

The mission of the NERGN is to promote and improve health and social well-being of those with inherited conditions through collaborations among public health professionals, private health professionals, educators, consumers and advocates in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
