Your Money Your Goals IconPeople with disabilities, like all consumers, deserve fair treatment and access to the information, tools, and support they need to enhance their financial well-being. This training will introduce you to the many resources available to financially empower individuals with disabilities, provide training around the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s curriculum Your Money, Your Goals, and explore ways for you and other staff members to succeed in your work.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

  • Provide knowledge of CFPB’s Your Money, Your Goals toolkit, Focus on Persons with Disabilities Guide and additional financial empowerment resources
  • Provide a train the trainer experience that increases the confidence of trainers to conduct follow-up trainings with front line staff
  • Explore strategies for successful use of these tools and resources with clients

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

This training is for anyone responsible for working with individuals with disabilities on issues related finance. This could include representatives of School districts, vocational rehabilitation programs, workforce agencies that have a disability focus, independent living organizations, Transition Coordinators, general and special education teachers, case managers, self advocates, housing organizations, and adult service providers for people with disabilities.

Tobey Partch-Davies, PhD

Tobey Partch-Davies, Ph.D., M.S., M.A., is currently the Project Director on Poverty and Disability at the UNH-Institute on Disability, and an instructor for UNH-Discovery Program where she teaches The Right to Be Disabled. Her work consists of coordinating research and evaluation projects funded by government agencies, private foundations and private contractors. Her scholarly agenda involves the social determinants of health with a special focus on financial capability and poverty among individuals with disabilities, and more recently the use of an implementation science framework for evaluating evidence based practices. Prior to her work as a researcher, she coordinated employment and community based services in partnership with Vocational Rehabilitation, community rehabilitation providers and developmental services. Since then she has led multiple studies investigating the effects of workforce development, work incentives, financial coaching, and asset accumulation on the socio-economic status of persons with disabilities and minorities. She is currently leading several investigations related to the fidelity of implementation of an evidenced based home visiting practice and its effects on maternal and child health. Dr. Partch-Davies currently serves on the UNH Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, and is Secretary for the National Association of Disability Benefit Specialists, a division of the National Rehabilitation Association. Prior to returning to the UNH-IOD in 2009, Dr. Partch-Davies served for six years as founding Director of the Center for Community Economic Development & Disability at Southern New Hampshire University, where she served as Principal Investigator for a NIDRR funded Asset Accumulation and Tax Policy Project; a three state Asset for Independence Act grant to administer Individual Development Accounts; Living with Independence, Freedom & Equality (LIFE) Project, and the Principal Investigator for several CMS funded sub-studies for New Hampshire’s Medicaid Infrastructure Grant.

Thomas Foley, JD

Tom Foley was trained as a tax lawyer and financial planner. He leads WID’s business consulting, financial inclusion, and information technology access practice. After more than 30 years of experience in the disability community, Tom authored EQUITY, the first asset building book for people with disabilities. He also serves on the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund Board and has been recognized by numerous organizations, including the Center for Economic Development (CFED), National Disability Institute (NDI), and Center for Financial Independence and Innovation (CFII) for his financial inclusion work.

Olivia Calderon

Olivia Calderon is the Chief Strategist for Special Populations, Office of Financial Empowerment, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). At the CFPB, Ms. Calderon expands financial capability services to low-income and economically vulnerable consumers who often face complex challenges in the marketplace as they strive to gain access to safe and affordable financial products and services.

Jeffrey Manning

Mr. Manning began his career with the FDIC’s New York Region in 2009 as a Mid-Career Compliance Examiner in the Boston North Field Office, Lexington, MA.  He was promoted to Commissioned Compliance Examiner in 2011 and to Senior Compliance Examiner in 2014.  During that time Jeff served as Examiner-in-Charge of several large and complex Compliance and CRA examinations.  Further, he participated in multiple examinations in the North-East, Mid-West, and West Coast.  Prior to joining the FDIC Jeff worked in three Community Banks located on the North Shore of Boston for more than 25 years.  He has a background in Retail and Residential Lending, Deposit Operations, Branch Operations, Audit, Compliance and CRA.

Presently, Mr. Manning serves as a Community Affairs Specialist in the Boston Area Office which encompasses all six New England states.  In this position he assists with planning of area activities, to achieve the overall mission of the Community Affairs Program.  Jeff works with financial institutions to promote compliance with the spirit and letter of   the   Community   Reinvestment   Act (CRA) and serves the community and the public through outreach, education, and technical assistance activities.  He also works with non-profits and Community Based Organizations encouraging economic inclusion of all individuals in banking and financial literacy.

Mr. Manning is a graduate of Suffolk University, Boston, MA, receiving a Bachelor’s of Science/Arts in Business Management.
