By popular demand the ATinNH After School Series is back. Please join us for these two-hour afternoon sessions and discover how you can immediately implement new techniques to engage students in interactive learning and a world of powerful apps to support individuals with disabilities. There will also be a special session where you can create customized solutions for your students.

iCreATe – Making, Taking and Implementing

Have you ever thought, “if I could only create a customized…for this student”?  If you have, then this is the workshop for you.  When you register you will be asked what challenge you are trying to overcome for your student.  With that information, Dr. Therese Willkomm, the MacGyver of assistive technology, will bring materials and her ideas to help you create a solution to bring back to your student.  By working with Dr. Willkomm you will learn necessary skills to empower you to take on your next fabrication project.

Mastering the Accessibility Features of the iPad

The built-in iPad accessibility features of the iPad make it an increasingly more desirable device for students of all ages.  Although dictation and text to speech features have become more common place, there are a wide variety of customizable settings to reach all students.  Using hands-on exploration, participants will learn how to customize the iPad to accommodate for functional limitations such as; vision, hearing, communication, physical limitations, and learning.  All of this is available without purchasing a single app.  Participants are encouraged to bring an iPad to the training but a limited number of iPads will be available for use.

iPad Apps for Executive Function

Many children and adults struggle with executive functioning. Tasks such as initiation and completion can be a daily struggle. Organization of ideas and prioritizing the to-do list can be overwhelming.  There are a wide variety iPad apps available to support students who experience executive functioning difficulty.  Participants will explore an assortment of apps to assist these students.  They will delve into the app features associated with executive functioning as well as customization of the apps.  Participants are encouraged to bring an iPad to the training but a limited number of iPads will be available for use.

101 Solutions using the iPad Camera

Nowadays people have the means to snap a picture at any given moment.  We have a camera “in our back pocket”.  Participants will explore a variety of apps that use photos, videos and scanned images captured with the iPad camera to support individuals who experience vision, hearing, communication, physical, learning, and neurobehavioral limitations.  Participants are encouraged to bring an iPad to the training but a limited number of iPads will be available for use.

Therese Willkomm, PhD, ATP, directs the NH Statewide Assistive Technology (ATinNH) Program with the Institute on Disability, is a clinical associate professor in the University of New Hampshire Department of Occupational Therapy, and coordinates the graduate certificate in AT and the disability studies minor. Known internationally as “The MacGyver of Assistive Technology” and more recently as an expert in iPad modifications and apps for individuals with disabilities, Dr. Willkomm has provided AT services for over 30 years and authored 22 publications.
