Session Descriptions

Creating Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes
Monday, August 3, 2015
Therese Willkomm, Ph.D, ATP
Over 80% of assistive technology solutions can be created in five minutes or less, for five dollars or less, using everyday items in extraordinary ways. Participants will explore over 50 solutions that can be quickly created using 8 different plastics, 10 specialty tapes, and 5 basic tools. Each participant will create 3 assistive technology solutions.

Reuse, Repurpose, Repair, and Refurbish
Tuesday, August 4, 2015
Therese Willkomm, Ph.D, ATP and Paul Pelland
Assistive Technology can be reused, repurposed, repaired, and refurbished. Participants will learn how to repurpose everyday items into usable AT solutions. Each participant will fabricate two solutions using repurposed items. Participants will also learn basic repair and maintenance of a wheelchair and will explore resources for finding reused assistive technology solutions.

Apps Across the Curriculum: Supporting Struggling Learners on All Devices & Platforms

Participants will learn about free and low cost AT solutions to support students who experience physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations. Apps for reading, writing, executive function, and math will be explored. This workshop requires participants to bring their own device with administrative privileges for downloading and installing apps.

Solutions for Easier Living and Working

Explore hundreds of solutions for easier living and working, including: one-handed solutions, back saving solutions, solutions to reduce slips and falls, grasping solutions, reminding solutions, and solutions for low vision and hearing loss. This workshop will also include amazing iPhone/iPad apps, accessories, and adaptations for use at home and work.

Making Assistive Technology Information Accessible

Websites and social media provide immediate access to assistive technology information, devices, and resources.This session will discuss and demonstrate how websites, PowerPoints, and social media sites can be made accessible for individuals with disabilities. A hands-on portion of the day will explore Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, podcasts, list serves, and more for learning about Assistive Technology.

Registration Fee

Monday & Tuesday: $99 per day*
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: $85 per day
* Includes make and take materials fee

**Registration fees include light continental breakfast, lunch, and materials.

Participants in each workshop are eligible for 5 staff development credits/hours per day or UNH CEUs or ATP CEUs.

Presenter(s)
Therese Willkomm, PhD

Therese Willkomm, PhD, ATP, directs the NH Statewide Assistive Technology (ATinNH) Program with the Institute on Disability, is a clinical associate professor in the University of New Hampshire Department of Occupational Therapy, and coordinates the graduate certificate in AT and the disability studies minor. Known internationally as “The MacGyver of Assistive Technology” and more recently as an expert in iPad modifications and apps for individuals with disabilities, Dr. Willkomm has provided AT services for over 30 years and authored 22 publications.

Stacy Driscoll

Stacy joined the IOD in February 2014. She worked as program coordinator with Assistive Technology in NH and more recently with UNH4U before joining NH-ME LEND. Stacy began her career in education as a paraprofessional, then went on to earn her BA and M.Ed, Stacy is a is a Nationally Certified Assistive Technology Professional and has a graduate certificate in Assistive Technology. Through the years Stacy has taught in multiple districts throughout NH as special educator, classroom teacher, Title 1 teacher, and paraprofessional. She has provided services to individuals with disabilities for 30 years and has conducted trainings and consultation services regionally and nationally including teaching post-secondary courses in both education and assistive technology. Stacy is a lifelong learner excited to share in the learning process with others.

Paul Pelland

Paul Pelland is the program administrator for the Refurbished Equipment Marketplace at Crotched Mountain ATECH Services and is responsible for fabricating and modifying equipment for ATECH clients. Mr. Pelland holds an associate’s degree in automotive technology from Benjamin Franklin Institute of Boston, and certifications to diagnose and repair power mobility equipment from Pride, Invacare, Sunrise and Permobil.

Diana Petschauer, MEd, ATP

Diana Petschauer, M.Ed., ATP is a RESNA certified AT Professional and is the CEO of AT for Education and Access4Employment. Diana has over 20 years of experience in Special Education & Disability Services, Pre-K-12th grade, as well as post-secondary, and she presents nationally and locally. Diana manages her multi-disciplinary team of consultants who provide comprehensive AT evaluations, training & services for students to access education and for adults to access employment, home and the community.

Wade Wingler, ATP, CEAS

Wade Wingler, ATP, CEAS is the Director of the Assistive Technology Center and the INDATA Project at Easter Seals Crossroads in Indianapolis. Wade did his undergraduate work at Butler University and holds an MBA from Indiana State University. He speaks nationally and internationally, and is an adjunct professor of assistive technology at Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis, Vincennes University. He also hosts the popular internet radio program and podcast “Assistive Technology Update.” Wade is the past-chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Disability—City of Indianapolis, the past-president of the Indiana Rehabilitation Association, and serves on a variety of advisory boards.
