Application for Online Training: Employment Consulting and Workplace Support

Description:

This online mini-course teaches employment specialists, job coaches, and other employment staff to assist employees with disabilities to succeed in community jobs. Participants learn to identify and enlist natural company resources for training and support, to adopt a consultant approach, and to effectively include an employee in the culture of the workplace. The course is designed for staff who provide direct placement, training, or follow-up services to individuals in supported or competitive employment. Topics include:

  • How to adopt a consultant approach at a business
  • Analyzing workplace cultures for social inclusion
  • Using employer and coworker training resources
  • Handling difficult workplace support issues

The course will be conducted online for a four-week period beginning Monday, February 27, 2012. Participants log into the training each week at any time from anywhere with access to the internet, and work at their own pace. Completion of each week’s module takes about 5 hours. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course.

Each week’s instructional module will feature a “mini-lecture” with state-of-the-art approaches to employment support, animated and filmed video scenarios showing the strategies in use, and guided discussion in small groups with other participants and with the instructors. Participation includes a fieldwork component following the workshop to apply the strategies learned and evaluate their effectiveness.

Week 1: Feb. 27 - Mar. 2, 2012
Week 2: Mar. 5 - 9, 2012
Week 3: Mar. 12-16, 2012

The remaining cost of instruction is subsidized by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. To allow for individualized instruction, enrollment is limited to 40 participants. To fulfill the goals of the grant, participation includes a fieldwork component, involving implementing the strategies learned with a consumer following the training, and completing brief data forms.
